The final match of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics hockey tournament between Russia and Finland was a spectacle that demands immediate attention yet warrants a detailed analysis. This game encapsulated the essence of unexpected outcomes and the complexities of sports dynamics.

Pre-Match Expectations and Early Game Surprises

As the game commenced, the excitement was palpable. However, the anticipation quickly turned to disappointment for Russian fans. The Finns came out strong, dominating the first period with 15 shots on goal. Russian goaltender Ivan Fedotov was remarkable, preventing any goals during this intense phase. Despite this initial surprise, the Finns maintained their momentum, eventually scoring two decisive goals that sealed their victory and earned them the gold medals.

Performance of the Russian Team

While the Russian team was present on the ice, their performance could have easily resulted in a more lopsided defeat against a modest NHL team. The Russian squad’s lack of coordination and inability to capitalize on opportunities was evident. This lackluster performance raises questions about the selection and preparation of the team.

Individual Performances: The Silver Linings

Amidst the overall disappointment, a few Russian players managed to stand out. Gratsyuk and Fedotov, in particular, enhanced their reputations and potential value in the NHL. Sherebzyanov also showed promise but fell just short of making a significant impact. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Vadim Shchipachev, the standard-bearer of the Russian delegation, whose performance did not justify the responsibilities bestowed upon him.

The Role of Leadership

The decision to make Shchipachev the captain and standard-bearer was controversial. His position in an expanding NHL team, despite his individual skills, did not merit such leadership roles. This decision reflects a broader issue within the team’s management and selection process. Trusting individuals who are not prepared for such responsibilities leads to predictable failures.

Historical Context and Trends

Historically, the Finnish team has had a strong record against Russia in Olympic matchups. The trend continued in Beijing, with Finland demonstrating superior team cohesion and strategy. The defeat in Beijing signifies more than just a loss in a final; it indicates a systemic issue within Russian hockey. The second-string Finnish team outperformed their Russian counterparts, highlighting the depth and development of Finnish hockey compared to Russia’s reliance on individual brilliance.

Strategic Implications for Russian Hockey

This defeat should prompt a reassessment of strategies within Russian hockey. Aggressive approaches such as expelling Finnish players from Russian clubs could be considered, although this might harm the competitive edge of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). A more nuanced strategy would involve leveraging this defeat to attract Finnish investment in the KHL. Emphasizing fair investment opportunities could enhance the league’s prestige and financial stability.

The Marketing Paradox

From a marketing perspective, Finland’s victory offers a unique opportunity for the KHL. By capitalizing on the heightened interest in Finnish hockey, the KHL could attract a new audience and increase its market share. Engaging Finnish investors and fans could turn this setback into a long-term advantage, creating a stronger, more inclusive league.

The Path Forward

To avoid further decline, the Russian hockey administration must adopt a proactive approach. This involves not only addressing immediate tactical shortcomings but also fostering a culture of accountability and strategic foresight. Ensuring that capable individuals are placed in positions of responsibility is crucial.

Reflections on the Loss

Reflecting on the reasons for the loss, the absence of NHL players was a significant factor. However, this alone does not excuse the lack of preparation and adaptability shown by the Russian team. Comparing this loss to a potential defeat against Germany in Pyeongchang underscores the need for higher standards in evaluating success. The focus should not be on avoiding disasters but on achieving excellence.

Conclusion

The 2022 Beijing Olympics hockey final between Russia and Finland was a game of unfulfilled expectations for Russian fans. While individual players like Gratsyuk and Fedotov provided some solace, the overall performance highlighted deep-rooted issues in team management and strategy. Learning from this defeat involves more than just changing players; it requires a fundamental shift in how Russian hockey approaches team selection, leadership, and international competition. By leveraging this experience, Russian hockey can rebuild and aim for future successes, turning setbacks into stepping stones for greatness.

Vyacheslav Bykov: “Sixty percent of today’s roster will play in Sochi” (Photo © RIA Novosti/Vladimir Fedorenko)

After the 2-1 loss to Czech Republic in the 2010 World Championship in Germany, Vyacheslav Bykov gave an interview to the popular Russian website Sovietsky Sport. Bykov stated that the sixty percent of today’s roster will be playin in the 2014 Olympics, talked about his future with the Russian national team, tried to analyze the reasons of the defeat and also talked about the foreigners policy within the KHL.

Bykov: “This was a dramatic game for us, since the first seconds of it. We allowed such an early goal. Fortune smiled our opponents when they needed it more. It took us a lot of time to get a chance to beat the Czech defense. And it wasn’t easy at all. Their goalkeeper [Tomas] Vokoun had a brilliant game. Our players didn’t manage to realize their moments, even if we had not a few of them. But anyway I’ve thanked the guys because they fought till the last second. I’ve told them that the Silver is a product of their hard work and it’s worthy of respect. I express regrets to our fans…we tried hard, but luck wasn’t on our side today.”

What’s next for Team Russia and in particular for its staff?

Bykov: “We arrived here to get a medal, and it looks like we reached our goal. But any medal but the Gold one gives you a bitter taste in the mouth. We are upset. In the first instance we are upset because we couldn’t give joy to our fans. But my future will be discussed by the Russian Hockey Federation and the Minister of Sports.”

Do you want to stay at the head of the national team?

Bykov: “I didn’t think about this yet.”

After the game you got a call from Russian President Dmitri Medvedev.

Bykov: “He congratulated the team – all the players and the coaches – for the silver medal. He thanked us for the good job. Because we got a decent result. He emphasized that the most important thing is not to get back to the level of the 90s, where Russia rarely got medals. And two golds and a silver in a row it’s not bad, really not bad. He understood that all the players are upset, but he did want to congratulate them all.”

Did the President talk about your future within the national team?

Bykov: “I don’t want to discuss this matter now.”

Today’s defeat in the final match was a casuality due to casual circumstances?

Bykov: “It’s hard to reply to this question. We created scoring chances and our players performed at a good level. We had to score! But we couldn’t…We have to give credit to the Czechs. They deserve the title of World Champions. They had a difficult path through the tournament. They deserved to win.”

This tournament looked a bit like the ones from the 80s, where Swedes, Czechs and Finns played without NHL players. And everyone was expecting the first place from Team Russia. Do you agree?

Bykov: “I don’t want to get involved into polemics concerning other teams. In the 2000 [World Championship in St. Petersburg] we had a line up full of stars and we could only get the 11th place in that home tournament. Why now we try to cancel the merits of the young guys who arrived to the tourney and worn the national team’s jersey? They made their duties of citizens, they gladdened the fans. Why we want to cancel all this?”

Do you think that the second place is your personal failure?

Bykov: “A failure is the eleventh place, as I said earlier. But the second place is surely bitter, because it’s not the first.”

But your roster was considerably stronger than the others.

Bykov: “Do you want me to resign right now?”

Your contract will run out in August.

Bykov: “Then wait till August. Or maybe until the executive committee will take an official decision.”

Will you go there?

Bykov: “If I have to then I’ll go.”

Don’t you think that combining the work with the national team and the work with a KHL club was a wrong decision?

Bykov: “No. Undoubtely no. Absolutely no.”

Do you still have motivations to work with the national team?

Bykov: “I need to sit and think. Even more so that it’s not up to me only, but it’s also up to the federation.”

If you could get back to the start of the tournament and change something, would you correct anything?

Bykov: “I don’t think so. Up to the finals we made the correct steps and we got the results. Even before the final I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Let’s say that [Alexander] Ovechkin didn’t start scoring on the powerplay playing as defenseman.

Bykov: “We are patient. Sooner or later Alex would have scored [this way]. But during this tournament it didn’t happen. Well, our hopes don’t come true every time. But in any case this was a plus for the team. Ovechkin’s appearance in our powerplay put further pressure on the opposition. Well, he had a couple of bad games…But the guys played to win.

Don’t you think that the goalie had some mistakes in the final game? We allowed the first goal too quickly.

Bykov: “No. We had no regrets about letting Semyon [Varlamov]’s play. The goals weren’t his fault.”

How does Fedorov feel?

Bykov: “He picked up a concussion. He doesn’t feel very well. And [Artem] Anisimov has a broken hand. He couldn’t hold the stick even after an injection. Many players played with injuries.”

Some people took off the silver medal immediately after the ceremony. And you arrived to the press conference without it. Maybe the silver medal was so bad that you wanted to put it in the pocket?

Bykov: “Maybe, no…But you can understand us. Our aim was to get the gold medal. We fought hard for it for the whole year. And then it steamed away. Emotions had the best of us. Bitterly…”

Your career with the National Team started with the 2007 World Championship in Moscow, where we got only a bronze medal. Now your team got a silver. What was worse?

Bykov: “Of course, having lost in the finals, you can joke yourself out, for example, say that we are the winners among losers. But for the Russian national team this is sad, especially now.”

Even before the finals you said that the higher level of our rivals is a consequence of their play in the KHL. And the final game confirmed that since goals and assists came only from KHL players.

Bykov: “If the FHR and the KHL don’t reach a mutual understanding then we won’t have hockey anymore in Russia. In the clubs the place of Russians is took by foreigners, teams can already dress six of them, soon going up to seven, without considering Latvians, Belarusians, Kazakhs, which aren’t counted. And what happens? Youngsters will start going away. Simply, there is no space for them in the KHL. Are we going to be better than the NHL soon? Instead of that we’ll be in a hole. Into a very deep hole.

Can you explain us why?

Bykov: “Because then we won’t have home grown players. And without it there is no future for Russian hockey.”

Between the staff of the national team and the KHL there is a dialog or troubled relations?

Bykov: “This is a question for the FHR.”

If the situation doesn’t change then [team Russia’s performance] in Sochi will be under threat?

Bykov: “Undoubtely. Young players that we might want to consider for the 2014 Olympics don’t have space to prove themselves in the KHL. The limit for foreign players needs to be not raised, but diminished, like they did with goalkeepers. They didn’t let foreigners to get signed, and then some talented Russian goalies immediately appeared. Because they got a chance to play and progress. As one of the National Team coaches I say: the number of foreign players must be limited. Or otherwise in the future we will have huge problems. Including Sochi.”

Two young stars were brought – Artem Anisimov and Dmitry Kulikov. Were they called for the future?

Bykov: “Both have a bright future. We know that we needed them to play here in order to get them acquainted with the national team as soon as possible. Sixty percent of today’s roster will play in Sochi. This is clear. But we need more young players. Besides, we are really satisfied by Anisimov and Kulikov’s play with the national team.”

Team Czech Republic won the Gold Medal in the 2010 WC Finals. The Czechs prevailed 2-1 after an early goal by Jakub Klepis assisted by Jaromir Jagr and a marker from Tomas Rolinek late in the second period. Pavel Datsyuk cut down the Czech advantage with a third period goal, but Bykov’s team didn’t manage to revert the score. Surely this wasn’t the best season for Team Russia.

Ovechkin and other Russian players didn’t manage to tie it up despite a couple of powerplay chances in the second half of the first period as Tomas Vokoun played solidly between the pipes. Pavel Datsyuk managed to put the puck in the back of the net during a last second rush, but the clock hit the zero before the puck went in.

During the second period Team Russia pushed the gas trying to tie it up, but without much luck. At the eighteenth minute Ovechkin and Fedorov collided deep in the zone, Karel Rachunek got the puck and brought it up, then centering for the rushing Tomas Rolinek, who deflected the puck in with the skates, but the refs ruled the goal valid.

In the final stanza the Czechs controlled the game and kept playing a slow tempo hockey. Team Russia looked tired and couldn’t build good offensive rushes until a late goal by Pavel Datsyuk with the man advantage and Varlamov sitting on the bench. Bykov’s team kept on pushing, but the clock ran out, gifting Czech Republic a well deserved win.

Semyon Varlamov had a good game between the pipes, with 23 players. But his good performance and a roster with 13 Olympians wasn’t enough to get past a well organized Team Czech Republic.

Don’t be so modest!

Semyon Varlamov: “In a couple of chances they simply didn’t have room. I’m not saying that they brought a bad team here. Canada can beat anyone with any roster. But this time we were better.”

Did you see that in the second period Brooks Laich slashed Ovechkin from behind? And he’s a Caps player too!

Semyon Varlamov: “In general Team Canada played very roughly. When the score was 3-0 [Corey] Perry slashed Sasha [Ovechkin] from behind. That was really dirty. I’m sure that Perry did want to injure him.”

Why?

Semyon Varlamov: “So that he couldn’t play again in the tournament.”

That’s mean.

Semyon Varlamov: “Agreed. But in Team Canada there are two players like that. Perry and [Steve] Downie. And the second one really confirms his surname. You know what I mean. He behaved shamefully.”

Team Russia defeated team Finland 5-0 in the last Qualification Group game of the 2010 World Championship. Alexander Ovechkin ended his goal streak.

Team Finland started well the first period, putting a lot of pressure over Varlamov. But despite a long 5-on-3 chance with Alexei Emelin and Dmitry Kulikov in the penalty box, the Finns didn’t manage to score. With the teams back on even strength Kulikov had a good chance getting out of the sin bin, but he was hooked down by a defenceman, thus drawing a penalty for Bykov’s team. On the consequent man advantage team Russia cycled well the puck, but couldn’t get it into Vehanen’s net.

At the sixteenth minute team Russia scored the first goal of the game: the puck moved fast from Alexander Ovechkin to Alexander Semin to Sergei Fedorov and went in after the veteran’s easy touch.

In the second period Russia started pushing a bit more and midway through the game they had a great chance when Evgeni Malkin and Kovalchuk exchanged the puck while on a 2-on-0, but Vehanen robbed Malkin of a goal with a fantastic save on the forward’s one timer.

At the 33rd minute, with the man advantage, a good rush put Russia up by two goals. Ilya Kovalchuk got the puck deep in the slot, but instead of shooting he nicely served Evgeny Malkin, who one timed the puck between Vehanen’s legs.

The consequent face off was won by Rangers’ Artem Anisimov. Maxim Afinogenov rushed fast on the right and shot, Nikolai Kulemin picked up the rebound and put it in the back of the net.

The thid period started well for Russia as they managed to quickly score twice. First Alexei Emelin scored with a great slap shot from the blue line, then Maxim Afinogenov spoiled a wrong change by Finland to get in front of Vehanen and make it a 5-0 goal with a quick wrist shot. After this goal team Finland benched Vehanen and brought in Predators’ Pekka Rinne.

The rest of the game was considerably slower and the Russians could celebrate a deserved win. Semyon Varlamov started between the pipes and finished the game with a 36-save shutout.

Team Russia’s next game will be the quarterfinal game against Canada, scheduled for Tuesday, May 20th.

Ilya Kovalchuk: “We need to win now like never before” (Photo © Bruce Bennet/Getty Images)

Ilya Kovalchuk gave an interview to Russian newspaper Sovetskiy Sport where he talked about going to the World Championship without a contract in the NHL, his favorites to win the Stanley Cup, what Russian players agreed to do after failing at the Olympics.

RussianHockeyFans.com offers you a translation.

Many thought that you won’t play for the national team. It is very risky as you don’t have a contract for the next season in the NHL. Besides your wife gave a birth to your son in March. Was this decision hard to take?

Kovalchuk: “After failing in Vancouver all guys agreed to go to the World Championship if there is a chance. We must win and make this season end well.
My wife Nicole understood me at once, told me that the whole family would be watching games on TV and cheer for us. She and the kids stayed in Miami. I spent a week there and flew to Russia.”

Many teams will have either weak or very young rosters. It will be easier for Team Russia to win the gold?
Kovalchuk: “In first place we have to think about our team. It doesn’t matter against whom we will play. All teams will fight against Russia. Especially the young guys, who will want to show themselves. But our team is young too, we have Kulikov, Anisimov, Varlamov, Radulov, Ovechkin, Semin… They aren’t old men, are they?”

But now there is more responsibility. What if we lose to the youngsters from the USA team in playoffs? It will be a low blow like at the Olympics 1980 in Lake Placid. What a shame it was…
Kovalchuk: “You think the Americans will ice students against us? (laughs). No way! The USA will have a good team, as well as Canada will. I saw the rosters, there isn’t a trace of the Miracle on Ice. And besides I don’t even want to think about losing, we aren’t going to Germany to lose.”

Have you talked with Ovechkin and Semin?
Kovalchuk: “Yeah, right after the Capitals were eliminated from the playoffs. I was really surprised that they lost to Montreal. It’s illogical when the 8th team in the East defeats the first. But such surprises are usual for the NHL. Every team has a chance. The Canadiens fought hard and they deserved to advance to the second round.”

Who is going to win the Stanley Cup now?
Kovalchuk: “I think it will be either San Jose or Chicago. Most likely the Sharks. They had hard time defeating Colorado in the first round but now they are 2-0 against Detroit and have good chances of getting into the semifinal. Moreover, I think that the Sharks will be on fire later.”

Do the coaches name the captain?
Kovalchuk: “We had and have the captain, it’s Alexei Morozov. It just happened so that this year he won’t be at the World Championship.” (Morozov is injured – RussianHockeyFans.com)

What would be your reaction if you became the captain?
Kovalchuk: “I was the captain in Atlanta, I know what it means. But we have a lot of leaders in Team Russia. You know, to win the gold you must have 22 captains on the team. And it doesn’t matter who has the C letter on his chest.”

Some say that there should be no World Championship in the Olympics year. What do you think?
Kovalchuk: “I don’t agree. A lot of our fans will go to Germany. And besides, it will be a huge event for Europe. Take the opening-game Germany – USA as an example! It will be played in a football stadium, there will be 76,000 spectators! It will go right into the Guinness World Records. And who can say that we don’t need such a championship?”

Russia’s first game will be on May 9 against Slovakia. Germany, 65 years since the Great Victory. What does it mean for you?
Kovalchuk: “A lot! The Victory Day is a marquee event for our country. We must pleasure our veterans and fans.
My grandfather fought in the war. He was a tankman, he reached Berlin. When I was a kid he told me lots of stories about the war. The WC final will take place in Cologne. And let’s hope that Russia will reach it’s own Berlin — win the gold. We need it now like never before.”

As reported by the official site of the Russian Hockey Federation, forwards Ilya Kovalchuk (New Jersey Devils) and Alexander Frolov (Los Angeles Kings), as well as blue liner Denis Grebeshkov (Nashville Predators) have been added to team Russia’s roster for the upcoming 2010 IIHF World Championship in Germany as their NHL teams were excluded from the Stanley Cup run.

This is surely a boost for team Russia, who will miss Anton Volchenkov and Igor Grigorenko due to injuries. Bykov and Zakharkin will be also without Alexei Morozov, Danis Zaripov and Sergei Zinoviev, all sidelined with injuries. Salavat Yulaev’s Alexander Radulov got a mild injury too and will miss the upcoming LG Hockey games in Sweden, but will play in Germany.
